Abstract Narrative

Synopsis: A Lehigh Valley artist uses his abstract art to express his emotion, and deal with his troubled past.

As I was working sound on a feature film in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, I encountered Anthony Smith Jr. His art studio was just down the hall from where we were filming.

I really admired his work, and felt it would be interesting to do a short documentary and talk to him about his art. A few days later, I sat down with him and spent nearly 4 hours listening to his story. Later, when I started watching it… all I could see was everything I did wrong while filming it.

And so, the footage sat on a hard drive for months. But I never forgot about it.

Early this year, I decided to look at it again. And almost immediately, I found a narrative that worked for me and within days it was finished. As I worked on it, I started to love the flaws.
